Not every funeral reaches the Soul.
The Call to Remember is the first spark. A return to sacred fire, ancient ritual, and true honouring of the dead.
This is where it begins.
There’s a sound I’ve come to recognise, but it's not one you hear with your ears, not in the beginning.
I feel it rise from the land. It stirs through the soles of your feet. It whispers in the wind, hums through the stones.
A call. An invitation. A summons....To remember.
To remember those who have left us in death.
But not in the way we’ve been taught by society, by previous generations.
Not in stiff suits, not with neat eulogies, not by swallowing our grief whole to make others comfortable.
No, not here on this land. This land and its call to remember asks more of us; in that asking, it offers more too.
We are being invited into something Ancient.
A sacred honouring that doesn’t rely on having a body, or a church, or a slot at the crematorium.
Just the willingness to light a fire and speak their name.
Not Every Goodbye Reaches the Soul
Some funerals feel like they kiss the surface, don’t they?
You show up, you cry (quietly), and you try to do your person proud.
There’s an ache though that comes later, isn't there, not just from the loss, but from the feeling that something’s missing.
You didn’t get to honour them your way.
There wasn’t enough time. 30 minutes at the Crem, followed by badly made tea and wilted sandwiches for an hour.
You weren’t ready, or maybe you were, but those 30 minutes didn’t fit the depth of all you wanted to share and remember.
Maybe you were on the periphery of the family circle, and you want to remember in your way, not the family's way.
I know that feeling. It lives in my bones, and our Ancestors and my land know this.
It’s why I’m creating something different.
The Soul’s Departure: A Fire Ceremony for the Ones We Still Carry
This autumn, on my land on the Ards Peninsula, something ancient will rise again.
Inspired by Norse ritual, by Viking funeral rites and the deep pull of ancestral memory, The Soul’s Departure is a full-day fire ceremony to honour your dead.
There’s no need for ashes. No need for a casket.
Just your love. Your loss. Your longing to remember in a way that feels true.
We will gather.
We will speak their names.
We will light the fire, and let the grief burn bright.
We will remember. We will release. We will return.
This Is Your Invitation to Begin
If something in you stirs as you read this, if you feel the pull to honour someone properly, fully, beautifully,
then this is your call too.
The fire isn’t lit yet.
But the land is listening and the circle is forming.
And you, lovely, are invited to remember.
